Where Does My Money Go? The 10-Minute Weekly Habit That Finds the Leaks
If “I have no idea where my money goes” sounds familiar, this one’s for you — and the fix takes about ten minutes a week. It’s not a discipline problem. It’s a visibility problem.
Big purchases aren’t the problem
You remember the big buys. What you don’t remember is the subscription you forgot you had, the $6 coffee that happened nine times, the “I’ll just grab a few things” that was actually $70. None of them feel big in the moment — and that’s exactly why they’re invisible. Added up, they’re usually the entire mystery.
You can’t plug a leak you can’t see. So the first job isn’t cutting — it’s looking.
The weekly reconcile
Once a week, sit down for ten minutes and match what actually left your accounts against what you planned to spend — line by line.
- Pull up your transactions for the week.
- Check each one off against your plan/categories.
- Flag anything you don’t recognize or didn’t plan.
- Carry your real balances forward to next month so nothing resets and hides.
That last step matters more than it sounds. If your budget “starts fresh” every month and forgets what actually happened, the leaks reset too. When the true balance rolls forward, the numbers have to tell the truth.
What you’ll find (everybody finds something)
The first time I did this, I found two subscriptions I’d forgotten and a drive-thru habit that was costing more than my car insurance. I didn’t need a lecture. I just needed to see it. Once it’s on the page, you get to decide whether it stays — and most of the time, it doesn’t.
Make it a ritual, not a chore
Pick a time — Sunday coffee, Friday night, whenever — and keep it short. Ten minutes. The goal isn’t guilt; it’s a clear picture. Clarity is what makes every other money decision easier.
The worksheet that keeps your balances honest
The printable I built for my own family. 14 pre-loaded reserves, fourth-grade math, and the mindset shift that stops annual bills from being surprises. Yours free — no credit card.
The register inside The Getting Ahead Guidebook carries your balances forward automatically and flags what’s off, so your weekly reconcile takes minutes instead of an afternoon. But a notebook and ten honest minutes will start finding leaks this weekend.
