Your Questions, Honestly Answered

If you don’t see your question below, email support@thegettingaheadguidebook.com β€” we’ll answer personally.

Β
Is there really a free trial? What’s the catch?

Yep, seven full days, all features. We do collect your payment method at signup so service keeps running on day 8 β€” but you can cancel anytime during the trial and you will not be charged. After seven days it is $8.95/month or $79/year. If you cancel, you get a 3-day grace period to look at your data, then access pauses. Your data sticks around for 90 days in case you come back.

How much does it cost?

$8.95 per month, or $79 per year (which works out to $6.58/month β€” saves you $28). That’s it. No upsells, no “pro tier,” no add-ons. Everyone gets the same full app.

Can I cancel anytime?

Absolutely. One click from inside the app, and you’re out. You keep access until the end of whatever you already paid for, and then it stops. No hoops, no phone calls, no retention team.

Do you have a refund policy?

Please use and test the app thoroughly during your seven-day free trial β€” that’s what the trial is for. We don’t issue refunds after the trial ends. If you’re unsure, give the trial a real workout before you subscribe.

Does it connect to my bank account?

No β€” and that’s intentional. You download a CSV from your bank (they all let you do this), drag it into the app, and categorize transactions. This keeps your banking credentials exactly where they should be: with your bank. Nothing about your logins ever touches our servers.

Is my financial data safe?

Yes. Your password is encrypted (bcrypt), data is sent over HTTPS only, each user’s data is completely isolated from everyone else’s, and we run automatic daily backups. We don’t sell your data, don’t use it for ads, and don’t train AI on it. Read our full Privacy Policy for the details.

Can I export my data?

Anytime. Inside the app, tap Backup and you get a complete JSON export of everything you’ve entered. It’s yours to keep whether you stay with us or not.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes β€” the app is fully responsive on any browser, phone or desktop. Our dedicated iOS and Android apps are also live in the App Store and Google Play β€” included in your subscription at no extra cost.

Who built this?

Randy Hess, under Personal Solutions Northwest, LLC (Saint Helens, Oregon). Built after years of trying every budgeting app on the market and finding them either too complicated, too gimmicky, or too expensive for what they actually do.

Can my spouse / partner use this too?

One account covers one household β€” so you and your partner can sign in and manage the same budget together. No separate seats to pay for.

🧾 What’s the deal with Sales Tax tracking?

Brand new for the 2026 launch, and honestly one of the reasons we finally shipped. It’s opt-in in one tap: open Sales Tax Center, pick your state from a preset chip (WA Β· TX Β· FL Β· NV Β· TN Β· SD Β· WY Β· AK) or type any rate, hit Enable. From that moment forward, a small Sales Tax field appears on the Add Expense form.

Log the tax you actually paid (or tap Estimate to auto-fill using your default rate), and the app rolls it up in a dedicated Sales Tax Center β€” by month, by vendor, and as a year-end print-ready Schedule A worksheet. Already have a year of CSV imports? Use the Back-Fill tool to retroactively estimate tax on all existing rows at once (dry-run preview first, of course).

Why it matters: if you live in a state with no income tax (Washington, Texas, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, South Dakota, Wyoming, or Alaska), the IRS lets you deduct actual sales tax paid on Schedule A in place of state income tax. Most people just take the IRS’s standard-table estimate because tracking felt impossible. Not anymore.

I live in Oregon (or Delaware / Montana / New Hampshire) β€” there’s no sales tax here. Is this feature useful for me?

Nope, and that’s totally fine β€” just leave the toggle off in the Sales Tax Center. The feature stays completely out of your way. No field appears on the Add Expense form. Every other part of the app works exactly as before.

Edge case: if you occasionally make big purchases in a neighboring state that does charge sales tax (a car in California, for example), you could opt in and log those rare transactions. But for most Oregonians, honestly, don’t bother.

I live in a state that has income tax β€” is the Sales Tax feature useful for me?

Maybe! For most people in income-tax states, the state income tax deduction beats the sales tax deduction. But some households (large one-time purchases, low state tax bracket) still come out ahead deducting sales tax. Our summary lets you make that call in five minutes at tax time instead of guessing. If it turns out state income tax was the better deduction, you’ve lost nothing β€” just leave the field blank and the feature quietly stays out of your way.

🏷️ What’s the Vendor Manager?

A single screen listing every distinct vendor in your ledger, with count and totals. You can rename any vendor (all past expenses update in one tap β€” goodbye “SQ *STARBUCKS #4482”), merge duplicates, and delete typos. Optionally have the app auto-create a Vendor Rule so future CSV imports categorize the same vendor cleanly next month.

πŸ“Š What’s the Category Report?

A flexible slice-and-dice report: pick one or many categories, pick which accounts to include, pick any date range, and get a clean printable breakdown. Answers the “how much did we really spend on groceries this year?” question without exporting to Excel.
